Citizenship (Registration and Naturalisation)
Registration
British citizenship can be obtained automatically in certain prescribed circumstances (eg by being born in the UK prior to 1 January 1983; by virtue of ancestry). People whose circumstances match those prescribed by the relevant immigration laws are entitled to apply to be registered as British citizens.
Naturalisation
There are two ways of qualifying to apply for British Citizen by way of naturalisation. One way is on the basis of holding Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and having been resident in the UK for the past five years. A second way is on the basis of being married to a British citizen and having been resident in the UK for the past five years.
NHIS will be happy to help you:
- assess whether or not you meet the requirements of the immigration rules to qualify for registration / naturalisation as a British citizen.
- assess whether or not you have the necessary supporting evidence to succeed with an application for registration / naturalisation as a British citizen.
- complete and submit your application, together with supporting evidence, in a manner which will satisfy the requirements of the immigration authorities
